Women tend to be afraid of weights. If this isn’t you, please give yourself a pat on the back. There lots of reasons why, but some of the more popular I hear are “I don’t want to bulk up” and “I don’t know what I’m doing”.
On the other hand, lifting weights will give you the toned physique you desire. As women we would have to work incredibly hard to bulk up from weights. It’s definitely possible, but like I said it would be incredibly hard. This is because we have less testosterone then men, and this helps them to build muscle faster.
Here are a few reasons why you should put your fears away, and get empowered by weights:
- Lifting weights helps to boost your metabolism, meaning that you burn more calories then you would just by doing cardio. It also stays elevated for longer, meaning that you continue to burn calories as you go about your day.
- It will give you more muscle. The more muscles you have as opposed to fat means your body has to use more calories to move you then it would if you had more fat. To give you a idea a kilo of fat will burn 5 – 7 calories a day, where a kilo of muscle will burn 50 – 100 calories a day. As a bonus, muscle takes up less room then fat.
- Lifting weights helps you to increase your bone density. This might be something that you’re concerned about now, but it will be as you age. Lack of bone density can be linked to osteoporosis.
- Its so much fun! You don’t have to slog it out on the treadmill for 30 minutes counting down the minutes. You can create a circuit and change exercises every minute, and mix it up every session. The options are limitless!
